Memorial Day

We need Memorial Day. Not for the “spectacular sales and savings” nor for opportunity to relax over a three day weekend - we need it to remind us that many have died and suffered for us. If we are to truly honor their memory, then we must attempt to learn something from the results and the consequences of our actions.

Anyone who has ever been involved in a shooting war knows that there is no glory or honor involved, regardless of the uniform that’s worn. There is only suffering, fear, disillusionment and death; the creation of nightmares to sear the souls and hollow the eyes of people who have witnessed things no one was ever meant to witness, and who are congratulated as “survivors.” The glorious dead remain dead, leaving behind widows and orphans who strive to find meaning in the void created by the loss of one they loved.

I give honor to those who have sacrificed themselves for an ideal of freedom, of liberty.  I despise those who have manipulated and subverted the truth to create fear and loathing in honest citizens in order to gain power, riches and feeding of their own egos. I abhor the jingoist slogans, propaganda machines, the deliberate obfuscations by which young men and women are sent in harms way, and the callous treatment of those whose service we have demanded but whose damaged bodies and psyches are now considered too heavy a burden for our society to carry.

By all means - let us take this day to remember the sacrifices of those we have asked to serve us.  Let us look long and hard at the causes for which we commit our military, that we define objectives that have a potential military solution, and make certain that  every possible alternative to armed conflict has been utilized, for in all our long history, war has never provided the lasting solution to economic or ideological conflict.

My cousin's hubby is 80 and he says that women do the nesting thing in the SPRING... when ALL has to be changed... and if ya can just get us past spring and into summer, then you are good for another year.. haha.. By the way, I spent a lot of time with my Dad when I was growing up out in the fields and the barn and with the allergies that I have, let me tell you I can BLOW my nose just like a man... Thanks for a great post... hugs, lottemae

Hi Jorge!
On Memorial day I was in my country for vacation so I wasn't thinking about these things as I think that not that many people think about Memorial day the way as you wrote in here. Even we all should. We all should stop for a while and to think. Thank you for such a great post.
Hope all is well with you. Jana.

I agree with you 100%. It would be a better world if every means possible was exhausted before going off to war. I do honor those who have fought in wars in the name of freedom.

I find it tragic when young often disadvantaged "children" are recruited for the military and promised so many good things when in reality they are going to be off to war and some will die or be maimed for life and never see those promises fulfilled. Most are just babies themselves and have not even tasted much of what life has to offer!

Hi Jorge,
Beautifully worded observation! Thank you.
Because I've been away so long, I read many of your past entries. When I got to the Patagonia
entry I was transported back to my Chilean adventures with my beloved Dean and our great friends in Santiago, Ifen, Valdivia and Osorno. We cruised on the Skorpios and loved the captain who wore many hats. We spent February in Chile for ten years. I love the Chileans. I love their humor and humility and hospitality. With tears in my eyes remembering wonderful times, I thank you.

So well said. The other day on the Denver channel was a woman who was a child and survived the holocaust. If we do not study history and pay attention to what brought on the wars that happened... history does have a sad way of repeating itself. Every person who has served in our military whether in wartime or peace time needs to be honored for their dedication and sacrifice. Thanks for your gift of writing and a great blog . hugs, lottemae

Excellent post Jorge. Sadly it seems there are no lasting solutions to anything. Seasons bring a reprieve from wars just long enough to erect new memorials. We must remember how to make war and build memorials as long as we bear the awesome burden of freedom. The cost to society for that freedom must always include care for those injured in the conflicts the society deems as necessary for survival. That's where the worm can gets knocked over. We commit to a conflict, decide it's not worth the commitment and then shrink from our responsibility to those who paid the highest price. Freedom is an awesome burden. Is it worth it? Americans have to answer that question daily.
