Aging

I hope you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving holiday. This morning we got up early and went hiking up one of our local mountains with two of our friends. It was a gorgeous, sunny day, and we worked up a good appetite for the celebrations that followed. While we were immersing ourselves in the majesty of our surroundings, the subject of aging came up. The following is a lighthearted view on a topic that becomes a concern to all of us as we get less young.

Aging

George Carlin's view on aging

Do you realize that the only time in our lives when we like to get old
is when we're kids? If you're less than 10 years old, you're so excited
about aging that you think in fractions. "How old are you?" "I'm four and a
half!"

You're never thirty-six and a half. You're four and a half, going on
five! That's the key. You get into your teens, now they can't hold you back.
You jump to the next number, or even a few ahead. "How old are you?" "I'm
gonna be 16!" You could be 13, but hey, you're gonna be 16!

And then the greatest day of your life . . . you become 21. Even the
words sound like a ceremony . . . YOU BECOME 21. . . YES!!!

But then you turn 30. Oooohh, what happened there? Makes you sound like
bad milk. He TURNED, we had to throw him out. There's no fun now, you're
just a sour-dumpling. What's wrong? What's changed?

You BECOME 21, you TURN 30, then you're PUSHING 40.

Whoa! Put on the brakes, it's all slipping away. Before you know it,
you REACH 50 . . . and your dreams are gone.

But wait!!! You MAKE it to 60. You didn't think you would!

So you BECOME 21, TURN 30, PUSH 40, REACH 50 and MAKE it to 60.
You've built up so much speed that you HIT 70! After that it's a
day-by-day thing; you HIT Wednesday! You get into your 80s and every day is a
complete cycle; you HIT lunch; you TURN 4:30; you REACH bedtime.

And it doesn't end there. Into the 90s, you start going backwards; "I
was JUST 92." Then a strange thing happens. If you make it over 100, you
become a little kid again. "I'm 100 and a half!"

May you all make it to a healthy 100 and a half!!

Hi Jorge,
Thanks for your visit and kind comment.  It is nice to come here and read your quality posts.  This one is funny.  I often ask myself how I got so old - when did it happen?  Where did the time go?  One day people were treating me like I was a kid, the next day people were looking at my gray hair and holding doors open for me, smiling at me because I reminded them of their granny.  I hope your day is going well.
Peace,
~Truly

I hope you had a good one as well.  I love the idea of hiking...it's been a while for me and I do miss it.  I always loved the Volksmarch when we lived in Germany.  Be well! - Theresa

Age never mattered to me... not as a youngster... turning 21 only meant I could drink legally, which really didn't matter because upstate New York those things were not monitored like they are in big cities, so I drank since I was 17 (well, not drank DRUNK, but occasionally when I could get away with it)... I think my mom did well in instilling in all of us kids that age was just a number... we could be and do anything we wanted, regardles of age or status or color or religion... we just had to work for it, WANT it badly enough, and never give up on our dreams... I lived by that until I was 40... then I was FORTY!  EeeGADS.... I was the big 4 0... I was almost half over with my life... I was older than I remember my mom ever being (she stopped somewhere around 35 in my head)... I actually woke up crying that 40 morning... first time I can remember ever being depressed about a number... an age.  Now, however, recent events have erased that misery... I realize that 40 can be 20 if I want it to be... I realize that to GOD, no matter how old we get, we're still children to him.  In numbers I'm now 41, about to be 42... in age I don't think I'll ever be older than my 20's ever again.

Spot on. Excellent Jorge.
I also love the idea of a 'local' mountain. I miss that. Brought up by the sea, I miss the sea. Taken to Wales a lot, I miss the mountains too. Thanks for bringing their image to mind. :)

For those of us born in 1942 there is one fraction that matters - 65 and ten months - the age at which we can retire with full bennies.  Talk about feeling 10 again!!!

I once promised myself I would never be mature enough to realise that I was.

I've kept my promise.

Thanksgiving here in Germany is not celebrated on the date the USA uses however they do have a Thanksgiving Day which is a religious day in October. Church festivities followed by family gatherings are the norm. I had T-day turkey with some German friends, having purchase a Butterball from the commissary and gave it to a friend with a large oven. She did it justice.

I have no idea what my age is. At any given moment I can be 30 or 80. I ride a bike everywhere and there are days I can peddle like a 20-something but when there is cold and rain then I feel age taking its toll. Yes, I ride in all weather and all seasons... I have no car here in Deutschland. I ride every day to work and back.

My dad says I am 60 and have entered my 61st year on this planet. Can this be true? Seems so short a time when I thought of my grandmother as being "old" when SHE turned 60. Hmmmmmm....

That's funny...

My son is 'turning' 11 but he has begged me to bypass the 11 candle celebration in lieu of 12 instead, because all his middle school friends are 12 (he's a year younger than his peers at school because of the cut-off dates being different in Canada and here).

I laughed because it seems so early to already be wishing the years away but he's dead serious....so we may skip the exact candle thing on his b-day cake at his party with friends this year and opt for a single sparkler instead...of course, it'll catch up with him in high school when all his friends are driving and he isn't.

PS  - are you pushing, reaching or making it?  I like to think every age should be a be-coming.

My Uncle and I were just talking about age yesterday too. He mentioned being in grade school and the teacher saying she was 25 and he said, That is old but he said 25 seemed old when he was that young. (laugh) I told him when I was young that 30 seemed old and 40 seemed ancient and now that I am over 30, 40 seems like young, only the beginning! My Mom joked and said that her great aunt would say to her brother when she was wearing a maxi skirt (back in the day) and 80 years old, I think these maxi skirts look good on middle aged women. HAHAHA

So I guess you really are only as old as you think you are. If you are young at heart, you can be young forever. :) That is my view anyway.

Hello Jorge,
It sounds as if your Thanksgiving was a memorable occassion.  I'm glad you enjoyed the hike and the festivities afterwards. I am indulging in leftovers this evening; looking forward to the stuffing, sweet potato, dark meat and lots of gravy.  Yes, even some mashed potatoes. Fall is very much with us.  Tonights temps will be in the mid-twenties.  Time to bank that woodstove for all-night heat.
Miss Sydney is on my site. Come say hello.  Be well.  Bittersweet
